The Lottery. The Trailer. The director is who?

My youngest daughter is 14 years old and she is currently studying a short story. The story is called The Lottery written by Shirley Jackson and first published in 1948. The book jacket describes the story as “A study in nightmare”.

So, let’s give it to young, impressionable, school kids to see the effect it will have. I think it’s a wonderful story. The New Yorker which does a monthly Fiction Podcast had A.M. Holmes reading The Lottery on 12 November, 2008.

My daughter’s assignment was to create a Film Trailer for the Short Story. The story line follows an ordinary small town activity building up to the drawing of the annual lottery. The person selected will be chosen as the sacrifice to ensure that the harvest will be bountiful. And the “sacrifice” is conducted by town members stoning the “winner”.

Here is my daughter’s Trailer. She created the Storyboard, directed the film, found the music and edited it all together. I am amazed at the quality for a 14 year old.

This is a wonderful trailer. I can’t believe the director is just 14 years old. I like it because it looks quite swedish, there’s a lot of Ingmar Bergman in there.

Awesome! Love it. That’s really cool (and more than a little bit creepy).

Don't just let that thought simmer. Expunge it with a comment.
